There are many companies offering Skip Hire services but before you commit take time to check out the handy tips on this page.

So before you hire that Skip consider the following key points.

What size skip do I need?

Most firms list the dimensions and approximately how much waste each skip can hold. Remember – when filling your skip you can only load it level to the top of the skip as this is a legal requirement.

What weight of skip do I need?

Will you be depositing heavy waste e.g. hardcore, brick, soil, etc or light waste e.g. timber, cardboard, etc? Certain types of skip are not suitable for certain types of waste – so check before ordering.

Where can I site my skip?

It is better if you are able to site your skip off road on private property i.e. your driveway or privately owned garden.

If you are not able to do this you can consider siting the skip on the road or grass verge outside your property. However - to do this you will need permission from your local council and it is very likely that you have to pay for a permit to do so.

Are there any Skip waste restrictions?

Certain types of hazardous waste e.g. asbestos, fridge/freezers, paint tins, batteries, tyres, gas bottles, TV’s. fluorescent tubes etc cannot be placed in general waste skips under any circumstance. If in doubt consult the Environmental Agency website.
